A first guide to study abroad aimed at parents
The New York-based Institute of International Education, or IIE, has published a first guide to study abroad for parents, containing critical information needed to inform and support their children as they embark upon the study abroad experience.

The guide’s three authors – Stacie Nevadomski Berdan, Allan E Goodman and William Gertz – stress the importance of parental involvement in study abroad decisions in A Parent Guide to Study Abroad, which was published last week.

Parental involvement in study abroad, they argue, “can influence and shape a successful cross-cultural experience by: clarifying the value of study abroad; identifying the right study abroad programme; figuring out the financials; staying safe and healthy abroad; preparing for success abroad; offering an appropriate mixture of support; and helping a child leverage the experience for personal and professional success."

The authors are international careers expert and award-winning author Stacie Nevadomski Berdan; president and CEO of the Institute of International Education Dr Allan E Goodman; and William L Gertz, president and CEO of the American Institute For Foreign Study, which organises study abroad and cultural exchange for more than 30,000 participants each year.

The new book is a companion guide to A Student Guide to Study Abroad and is pitched at universities and colleges, who are encouraged to use the book “widely in helping bring parents on board with study abroad, and helping them provide useful support to students who are looking into study abroad options”.

“Today’s graduates need a global mindset and international experience to compete for jobs,” says the IIE, suggesting that parents champion study abroad as an essential component of their child’s education.

The books cost US$4.95 each, US$1 per copy when bought in bundles of 20 as a launch offer, or can be obtained free when buying A Student Guide to Study Abroad.
