Exam cheats outsmarting universities

Universities must keep pace with technology and the ability it offers students to cheat, an expert said after a student cheating scandal involving iPads, writes Jordanna Schriever for The Advertiser.

The University of Adelaide revealed that 12 fifth-year medical students had so far admitted to taking screen grabs of exam questions, using university-supplied iPads. The students were among 180 in the year level all supplied with iPads when undertaking the three-month clinical placement rotation in human reproductive health. The university is investigating allegations that the students left the screen grabs on iPads for students to use in later rotations in the course.

University of South Australia Global Experience programme director Dr Tracey Bretag said cheating among university students was not rising, but new technology made cheating more complex. "What is happening is that universities are faced with different types of cheating now – it's not worse, but more complex," Bretag said.
