Surge in demand for law degrees despite fee hike
Data from Britain’s leading universities reveal an 8% rise in the number of students taking the principal law entrance examination this year, writes Graeme Paton for The Telegraph. The increase comes despite an overall drop in higher education applications nationally and follows a decision to almost triple the cap on tuition fees to a maximum of £9,000-a-year (US$14,200) for students starting courses in autumn 2012.
Examiners suggested that the shift towards law reflected the scramble for more career-focused degrees to offset the rising cost of university, which could leave some graduates with debts topping £50,000.
