PHILIPPINES: Iranian students file racism rap
Some 100 Iranian dentistry students last week filed a complaint with the Commission on Higher Education in the Philippines against academics, security guards and students of Manila Central University who they said branded them as "terrorists and terrorist sympathisers", writes Ashzel Hachero for Malaya.Three students along with their lawyer, Trixie Angeles, sought an audience with CHED chair Dr Patricia Licuanan despite fear of expulsion if they seek help from the commission. In a complaint letter addressed to Licuanan, the students said they had sent letters to Dr Lydia L Taganguin, Vice-president of the Office of Academic Affairs, Dr Eric Alforja, dean of the College of Dentistry, and university President Dr Aristotle T Malabanan, but they had yet to receive any feedback.
"Professors and staff of the university insult our families, race and culture as we have been called terrorists and terrorist supporters. We are routinely accused of cheating during exams, we are routinely discriminated against in grading and regularly suffer demerits for alleged 'unfair behaviour', and university guards disrespect us and call us terrorists," they added.
