NIGERIA: 'Universities must breed credible leaders'
The Speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, has passed on the responsibility of curtailing public office holders from misappropriating funds to universities, which he said must reclaim their roles as the breeders of credible leaders, writes Onche Odeh for The Daily Independent. The speaker, who was guest lecturer at the University of Lagos, is certain that proper handling of public funds would be ensured if youths, especially those in the universities, joined in asking questions about what those representing them were doing.
"Universities, in all parts of the world are regarded as the breeding ground countries look into for credible leaders. But in Nigeria, we are looking elsewhere to get our leaders," he said. Bankole is also not happy that Nigerian universities are operating at very low capacity, which has made it impossible for them to admit all eligible candidates. For this reason, he has hailed the introduction of private universities.
