BANGLADESH: 32 universities get innovation fund

Thirty-two universities in Bangladesh will get grants from the Academic Innovation Fund provided by the World Bank through the University Grants Commission by next month, Mizan Rahman reports for Gulf Times. Among the universities, 29 are public and three are in the private sector, officials of the Education Ministry said.

The Academic Innovation Fund was established with US$50 million from the World Bank in a bid to enhance the quality of teaching, learning and research in Bangladesh. The initiative titled the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) is being implemented with the financial support of the World Bank at a cost of $81 million, said a bank official in Dhaka. The official said the project would encourage innovation and accountability in universities and enhance technical and institutional capacity in the higher education sector.
