PAKISTAN: 1,000 scholarships for Afghan students

Pakistan has offered 1,000 scholarships to Afghan students to study in the country in almost all disciplines, writes Asim Hussain for The Daily Mail. Under the phased programme, as many as 200 Afghan students will join Pakistani universities this year. The first batch of students will be admitted in September at the start of the academic year.

The scholarship decision was made at a meeting late last month between an Afghan delegation led by Mohammad Saddique Patman, Deputy Minister for Education, and a Pakistani team led by Professor Dr Mukhtar Ahmed, Member (Operations and Planning) of the Higher Education Commission, and including senior officials at the Commission, Ministry of Education, Planning Commission and Foreign Office.

The scholarships will be offered in almost all disciplines with a particular focus on engineering, medicine and agriculture as desired by the Afghan delegation. Other important areas include pharmacy, computer science, social sciences, business education and language studies. The countries will also collaborate on faculty development and student exchange, joint research programmes, distance education and institutional linkage programmes.
